Swiss Tennis employs a structured ranking system to classify players based on their skill levels, ranging from amateur beginners to top-ranked professionals. This system comprises nine regional levels (R9 to R1) and four national levels (N4 to N1), with R9 representing amateur beginners and N1 denoting top-ranked professionals.

Regional Levels

  • R9 (Amateur Beginner)

    Ages: 4-6

    • Players are new to tennis, focusing on basic motor skills, hand-eye coordination, and fundamental strokes (forehand, backhand).
    • Engages in playful activities with foam balls and smaller courts (Red Stage).
  • R8 (Amateur)

    Ages: 6-8

    • Children have basic control over the ball and can sustain short rallies.
    • Introduction to simple scoring systems and slightly larger courts.
  • R7 (Lower-Mid Amateur)

    Ages: 7-9

    • Players begin developing consistency and improved ball control.
    • Engages in beginner-friendly matches, focusing on building confidence.
    • Players demonstrate improved consistency, control, and tactical awareness.
  • R6 to R5 (Middle Rank Amateur)

    Ages: 9-11

    • More focus on stroke mechanics, shot placement, and rallying skills.
    • Children start participating in local competitions with proper scoring systems.
    • Full court and standard balls are introduced.
  • R4 to R2 (High Rank Amateur)

    Ages: 10-14

    • Advanced skills emerge, including topspin, slice, and net play.
    • Tactical awareness improves with emphasis on match strategies.
    • Players often represent their clubs in regional competitions.
  • R1 (Top Rank Amateur)

    Ages: 12-16
